Chapter Nine

The last time Michelle felt this sick, she’d been eighteen and staring into a toilet while a bottle of cheap whiskey came back up.

She hated causing trouble for the company. Paula had shown her nothing but kindness since her first day, but there’d be worse hell to pay than petty theft if she didn’t resolve her issues with a certain colleague. With any luck, the havoc in her stomach this time would result in something better than getting slapped with a DUI and losing two days’ worth of wages to a hangover.

“Hey, girlie. Wanna have lunch?”

She glanced up from mounds of paperwork to see Lacy on the other side of her desk, a steaming plate of Indian food in her hand. Just the smell of all that curry made Michelle's stomach ache for a source of fuel more substantial than the Pop-Tart she’d eaten five hours ago.

“I wish I had time, but this theft stuff is making my job a nightmare.” She wondered if Harry had anticipated that when he’d devised his great plan. Not that he gave a damn about her comfort or convenience.

Eyes wide, Lacy pulled up a chair and placed the plate on her lap. “You know, everyone thinks Bree is behind this,” she whispered between forkfuls of rice.

Michelle pulled a granola bar from her drawer and peeled off the wrapper, doing her best to keep her voice even. “That’s odd. What about the guys? Evan’s new here and Todd seems to be working late a lot.” Which was why she always made sure to get the hell out by five o’clock.

Lacy shook her head. “They’re too close to Paula. I heard her explaining to the cops that there’s no way Evan could be involved. Anyway, Bree does the most work with the website and the Bath Buddies. It just makes sense.”

Wonderful. It may have made sense, but it didn’t do her a lick of good. She choked down the rest of her peanut butter and honey bar, which suddenly tasted like dog food.

“And get this,” Lacy continued. “Paula didn’t want to leak all the details in the meeting, but supposedly we’re missing a lot more money than ‘petty cash’. That’s why she called the police!”

By the time Lacy finished the sentence, she was squealing more than a newly crowned prom queen. She really got off on spreading rumors. Michelle raised a brow.

“Where do you hear all this stuff?”

“Around. Todd told me about the money.”

The foul wave that washed through her had the makings of morning sickness, food poisoning and a nasty hangover in one tidy combination. If Paula trusted Todd with details of the investigation, and Evan was her brother, then the list of possible suspects was dwindling fast. Only a few people in the office had access to the website and administrative business. At the top of the list would be Bree…and her.

Her fists clenched. If Harry didn’t manage to frame the right person, she’d dump him from her life for good. She wasn’t kissing his ass just to mess up more than she had in the first place.
